Please Help Free Lucy!
35 years ago, Lucy the elephant was taken from the forests of Sri Lanka, shipped to Canada, and put on display at the disgraceful Valley Zoo sponsored by the City of Edmonton to ‘entertain’ the crowds. For much of that time, she has been the ONLY elephant at the zoo, confined to a tiny piece of land where she is exposed to entirely unnatural weather.
Elephants are incredibly social animals that, in the wild, roam for miles every day, so keeping Lucy in solitude is nothing less than animal abuse! In 2007, elephant biologist Winnie Kiiru identified the Edmonton Valley Zoo as the WORST zoo in Canada for elephants.
The Valley Zoo has said that Lucy is too sick to be moved. Yet, at the same time, they post documents on their website showing her health is improving. Many other sick elephants have been safely transported to sanctuaries like The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee and Performing Animal Welfare Society - PAWS, where they are given hundreds of acres of land to roam free. Lucy deserves to live out the rest of her life in peace among friends in an appropriate climate.
Please HELP LUCY by calling Mayor Stephen Mandel’s office right now at 780-496-8100 and encourage him to do the right thing by fighting for Lucy’s release. You can also reach the City Council at 780-496-8110 or via email at Councillors@edmonton.ca.
